TORITA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING CHAIRPERSONS

The Tobacco Research Institute of Tanzania (TORITA) is vested into ensuring development

and dissemination of appropriate technologies to the Tobacco growing community for

improved productivity to support the Tobacco sector goals in social-economic development

of the country.

Fertilizer trials on YARAMILA Cereal and Sulfan were carried out at Tumbi, Tabora and

will be finalized in next crop season. The initial result indicates that there are improvements

on yields when tobacco is top dressed using Sulfan fertilizer than CAN 27%.

For the coming financial year the institute will continue with trials on YARAMILA Cereal

and Sulfan, it is expected by the end of June 2015 the results of trials will be available to the

stakeholders. The institute is also planning to recruit a breeder in order to improve services

and productivity for the crop. To tackle the environmental concern regarding tobacco curing,

the institute will continue to conduct research on alternative curing source to replace the use

of fire woods in curing tobacco.

In order to achieve the activities as listed above, the institute for the financial year 2014/15

expecting to collect a total of TZS 941,265,598 and the estimated expenditures will be as

follow TZS 511,265,598 as personnel enrolment, TZS 30,000,000 to complement on various

management meetings and TZS 400,000,000 for administration, research, training and

technology transfer to the growers.

The position of the crop on foreign earning and national development is of a paramount

importance. The crop is currently leading in earning foreign exchange to the Country

according to BOT (2013) report. TORITA still believes that tobacco growers in this country

will keep on increasing both production and productivity following registration and release of

new four varieties that are slow ripening and hence reduce crop losses. The research

institution is now focusing very much to improve plant breeding section for the better yields

in future. Other areas of focus will be on finding alternative curing material to replace woods

and improving the curing barns efficiencies. These areas of focus will be achieved if

stakeholders and Government will continue directing the financial support to the institute.
